Akona Medium Duty Refractory Mortar vs. Homemade High Temperature Mortar

Hello,

I am having trouble finding fire clay in the Cincinnati area.
I was wondering if the Akona® Medium-Duty Refractory Mortar - 50lb could be used as a sub for this in the high temp mixture?

Thanks,

Scott

ABSOLUTELY!

If you are lucky enough to be able to get your hands on Akona Medium Duty Refractory Mortar, that is an EXCELLENT substitute for our homemade refractory mortar blend (fine grain sand, hydrated lime, portland cement and fire clay).

Keep your receipt - you may have a bag leftover…

Now - at $55 a bag, you’re going to have about $300 - $350 in mortar costs, whereas the homemade refractory mortar runs about $120 to make. And it is just as good as any bagged / factory mortar (for the purpose of pizza oven building).
