Are flames shooting out the chimney normal?

I’m following the instruction son how to fire the oven and with the pile in the middle the flames just shoot right out the chimney. Is this normal? If it’s too far forward the flames will come out out the front and stain the outside too. Is the fire too hot, too much wood, too far forward?

Hi Ryan,

Sounds like too much wood, or some kind of a starter underneath the wood. The key to the firing instructions is to start slow and low, and add more fuel a log or two at a time.

if you are using a wax-and-sawdust or paper starter, less is more. You should not be using petroleum-based starters for multiple reasons.

The positive note is that you seem to have a good, dry wood supply.
