Once the fire brick is on the oven form, can I smear the left over high temp mortar all over the fire bricks? Will it help or hurt the oven?

It won’t do a darn thing - except eat up a lot of your time…

AND you’ll surely make a mortary-mess all over the edge brick on the hearth. And that stuff is hard to clean off…
