Laying the firebrick cooking surface

I am about to begin laying out the herringbone pattern of firebrick for the cooking surface. I hope this isn’t a silly question but the plans show laying the first brick on a 45 degree angle and laying out at the back of the oven. Would it make a difference if I started at the front? The void I created my be ever so slightly larger so If I end up with any gaps it would prefer it be at the back.
Thanks,

Not a silly question at all. I think the drawing was done that way to show the pattern itself with maximum clarity. You will have triangular shaped gaps no matter where you start your pattern, but if you start at the front as you suggest they will be a known size and will be even. Also, you will find the larger triangles easier to cut precisely.

I like it!
